I started out as a child.
-Bill Cosby
When I consider what I have to offer children as a presenter I keep in mind the child that I once was. In my elementary years, my report cards were filled with lots of Needs to Improve checks and few Satisfactory checks. I didn't appear to show any aptitude for writing or art. I was not a shining star. But it was in second grade that I had my first artistic illumination. My teacher placed my artwork of a giraffe on the bulletin board outside during the ice cream social. Even though it was just one of many. I was absolutely thrilled to walk up and stare at my work, presented for everyone to see.
Now here I am, a professional artist and writer. I want to light that same kind of fire in the students I see.
WHAT I DO-
I base my presentations on two basic ideas, that writing and making art is exciting and lots of fun and that kids can get those results in their own work. I come dressed in unusual painted clothes and my car is decorated to look like a rainbow repair service vehicle, an extension of my book, Sparky's Rainbow Repair (Sometimes I drive my New Beetle, which is covered in stars). The idea behind this approach is to loosen up students' imaginations and expectations.
My topics are adjusted based on the grade level of my audience but they generally include these ideas:
I started out as a less than average student but I turned out very well and you can too.
Good work is about process. Revision is part of the process.
Computers are amazing tools but they can produce images of people that look "perfect". A reminder that everyone is really perfect just the way they are.
I generally read one of my regular books to the younger students and for the older grades I read excerpts from some of the fairy tales rewritten by students.
I draw on the chalk board or computer projector so that students can watch the images as they form. I also use this medium to teach students about the visual symbols that are the everyday currency of their lives.
I end by answering student questions.
I sign and personalize books purchased by the students. This process is important for the student because it is a one-on-one exchange with me.
EDUCATION-
Kingsley Elementary in Waterloo, Iowa
University of Iowa, Bachelor of General Studies 1982
Employed as an instructor at Minneapolis College of Art and Design
for evening classes in the business of children's book illustration. 1993-4
EQUIPMENT NEEDED-
I will need a space that can be darkened.
A computer projector if you have one. If not , alert me and I will bring
my standard show on slides instead.
Something to draw on- a chalk or white board or an overhead projector.
Also the drawing tools and about 8 sheets of film for the overhead.
I will provide a speaker system for large audiences.
TIMELINE-
Here is a time line you may wish to follow:
1 month or more ahead-- call 763-425-8118 to schedule my visit.
1 month ahead?-- Inform the teachers of when they will be coming to see the show. An all-day event is three shows of one hour each plus signing time. Signing time may need to be split up with the bulk of it being done at lunch time. I will require as little as 15 minutes for lunch if necessary to allow for adequate signing time. The signing process is important as a time when students can interact with me on a one-to-one basis.
1 month ahead?-- Schedule the space for my event. Will it be in the library, the gym or the lunchroom? Because I show much of my presentation in slide form, the space should be able to be darkened. I prefer students to sit on the floor unless it is a theater situation.
Two weeks ahead-- This is the time to acquaint the students with my books and my web-site and really hype my visit. The more excited they are the more impact it will have on them.
1 week ahead, send home the sheet announcing my visit and the books available for sale. I will bring books with me.
1 day ahead-- Check to see that your computer projector, overhead projector, and screen are in working order.
You may wish to call 763-425-8118 to confirm my arrival time.
